Top 10 Things to Do in Rarotonga & The Cook Islands

If you’re dreaming of turquoise lagoons, warm island hospitality and a relaxed island lifestyle, the Cook Islands should be at the top of your list. Rarotonga offers the perfect mix of relaxation and adventure, and if you can add Aitutaki to your trip, even better.

Here are our top 10 must-do experiences in Rarotonga and beyond.

1. Cruise the Lagoon with Koka Lagoon Cruise

One of the absolute highlights of Rarotonga is the famous Koka Lagoon Cruise.

This fun-filled day takes you across the stunning Muri Lagoon on a scenic boat tour aboard a glass bottom boat, giving you the chance to spot incredible sea life even before you jump in to snorkel. You’ll snorkel in crystal-clear waters, enjoy live music and entertainment from the crew, and feast on a delicious BBQ lunch on a motu (small islet).

It’s relaxed, authentic and such a great way to experience the lagoon. While Koka Lagoon Cruise is a popular favourite, there are several fantastic lagoon cruise operators in Rarotonga, each offering slightly different experiences.

2. Take an Aitutaki Day Tour

If you do one extra thing while in Rarotonga, make it a day trip to Aitutaki.

Just a short 50-minute flight away, Aitutaki Lagoon is often described as one of the most beautiful in the world. Think endless shades of turquoise and deep blue, tiny uninhabited motu scattered across the lagoon, and water so clear, you can’t believe your eyes.

Day tours operate Monday to Saturday, departing Rarotonga around 8am and returning approximately 5:30pm, making it an easy (and unforgettable) full-day experience.

Once you arrive in Aitutaki, you’ll enjoy a short island tour by “le truck” before heading out on the highlight of the day, a lagoon cruise aboard a traditional vaka (catamaran). There’s covered seating, sun loungers, onboard toilets and freshwater showers, so you can comfortably relax and freshen up after snorkelling.

The snorkelling here is next level. Expect to see:

  • Giant clams
  • Beautiful coral formations
  • Schools of colourful reef fish
  • Huge trevally (they’re surprisingly big!)
  • And if you’re lucky, you may even spot turtles

The water clarity is incredible, and the guides are fantastic at helping beginners feel comfortable if you’ve never snorkelled before. The cruise stops at several motu, including the famous One Foot Island. Make sure to bring your passport so you can get it stamped as a unique souvenir of your visit.

With a BBQ lunch included and some of the most breathtaking scenery in the South Pacific, this is truly a bucket-list experience and absolutely worth the early start.

3. Visit the Local Markets

To really experience island life, head to the Punanga Nui Market, held every Saturday morning in Avarua. This vibrant weekly market is the place to find fresh tropical fruit, smoothies, homemade baking, local coffee, Cook Islands black pearls, handmade crafts and live music. It’s also one of the best spots to try local food favourites like ika mata and fresh poke bowls.

If you’re staying in Muri, the Muri Night Markets are another must-do. They’re open Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday evenings from 5pm and are perfect for a relaxed, casual dinner. Expect everything from fresh seafood and poke bowls to noodles, burgers, curries and sweet treats.

And a little insider tip: Cook Islands Coffee Company opens at 7am and is famous for its pastries. But get there early as they often sell out. Make sure to bring cash (NZD).

4. Snorkel at Muri Beach

Muri Beach is one of the best and easiest snorkelling spots in Rarotonga.

The lagoon is shallow, calm and protected by an outer reef, making it ideal for all ages and confidence levels. At low tide, you can even walk across parts of the lagoon toward the small motu (islets) scattered offshore.

Expect colourful tropical fish, coral gardens and beautifully clear water, with plenty of vibrant sea life to discover. You can also hire kayaks or stand-up paddleboards to explore further out into the lagoon.

5. Walk Dogs at the SPCA

Looking for something a little different? The Cook Islands SPCA offers visitors the chance to join their “Waggy Tail Walking Experience”.

Each morning at 9am, the team walks the rescue dogs up to the waterfall, and visitors are welcome to join for a $25 donation per person. It’s a beautiful walk and a wonderful way to help give these dogs some extra love and exercise. And if you’re lucky… you may even get some puppy cuddles.

Arrive at 8:45am for a short briefing before heading off. If you’d like to contribute further, the SPCA also welcomes donations. To book, call (+682) 54858 in advance.

6. Swim with Turtles

Rarotonga is known for its resident sea turtles, and you may be lucky enough to spot them while snorkelling, particularly on the western side of the island where the water is deeper and clearer.

While it’s possible to encounter turtles independently, joining a guided turtle tour increases your chances and ensures you’re taken to the safest and most suitable locations based on the day’s conditions.

7. Hike the Needle (Te Rua Manga)

For those who like to stay active, the Needle (Te Rua Manga) hike is a must.

This challenging but rewarding walk follows part of the cross island track, taking you through lush jungle to one of the island’s most iconic rock formations. The views from the top are incredible, stretching across the island and lagoon.

8. Drive Around the Island

One of the best things about Rarotonga? It only takes about 45 minutes to drive around the entire island.

Hire a scooter or small car and spend a day exploring at your own pace. Stop at hidden beaches, grab coconut water from roadside stalls, visit local cafés and soak up the scenery.

Rarotonga also has a simple bus system with clockwise and anticlockwise buses that loop the island throughout the day. It’s an affordable and easy way to explore, whether you’re heading to the beach, markets or out for dinner.

9. Watch the Sunset & Stop by Rarotonga Brewery

Sunset in Rarotonga is something you won’t want to miss. The western side of the island is the best place to watch the sun go down, with stunning views almost every evening.

One of the most popular spots is Black Rock, known for its dramatic coastal views and incredible colours as the sun dips into the ocean.

Other great sunset spots include beaches along Arorangi, Aroa Beach, and anywhere along the west coast… honestly, you’ll find plenty of beautiful, uncrowded beaches to pull over and take it all in.

For a relaxed afternoon, stop by the Rarotonga Brewery to sample locally brewed beers before heading out to catch the sunset.

10. Enjoy a Cultural Island Night

A cultural island night is a must-do in Rarotonga, offering a fun and immersive way to experience Cook Islands culture.

Enjoy a vibrant cultural show with traditional drumming, energetic dancing and storytelling, followed by a buffet dinner featuring local favourites like ika mata, fresh seafood and dishes, often cooked in an umu (underground oven).

Popular options include Te Vara Nui Village, Highland Paradise and Tamanu Beach, each offering a slightly different style of show. Some venues even offer adults only experiences for a more relaxed evening atmosphere. To see current schedules, locations and details, see here.
