Virgin Australia

Virgin Australia began in 2000 as Virgin Blue in Australia, offering travellers an alternative to Qantas. In 2003, the airline expanded into New Zealand with Pacific Blue, introducing trans-Tasman flights. While domestic flights within New Zealand were later discontinued, Virgin Australia currently operates direct flights between Queenstown and both Sydney and Melbourne, providing Kiwi travellers with convenient access to Australia.

In Australia, Virgin Australia also operates a wide domestic network connecting major cities such as Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and the Gold Coast. On its trans-Tasman flights, Virgin Australia mainly operates Boeing 737 aircraft, offering comfortable seating and reliable service.

The Difference

Virgin Australia makes it easy to stay entertained in the air! You can stream a great mix of recent movies, classic films, TV shows, and music through the Virgin Australia Entertainment app. Just download the app before your flight and connect to the onboard Wi-Fi once you’re on board. (Heads up: this Wi-Fi is only for streaming entertainment, not general internet browsing.)

Don’t have your own device? No worries—tablets are available to rent onboard. On longer flights with Airbus A330 and Boeing 777 aircraft, you’ll even get seatback screens with an even bigger range of movies and shows to choose from.

Fare Types

Similar to Air New Zealand, Virgin offers a number of different fare types which allow you to choose what services you would like as you travel.

  • Lite: The most basic fare includes your seat and one piece of carry-on luggage up to 7 kilograms. Food and entertainment are available for purchase on board.
  • Choice: Includes the same as the Lite fare but also includes one checked bag up to 23 kilograms.
  • Flex: Includes the same as the Choice fare, along with additional flexibility for changes and cancellations.

These fare types apply to both domestic Australia and international flights.

The Hubs

Queenstown Airport: Queenstown is Virgin Australia’s only direct New Zealand destination. The airport is compact but modern, with a single terminal that’s easy to navigate and a selection of cafés and shops. Its scenic approach through the mountains makes it one of the most memorable arrivals in the world. Transfers are straightforward, and the airport is just 15 minutes from central Queenstown by shuttle, bus, or taxi. During ski season and peak holiday times, it’s best to allow extra time for check-in and security.

Brisbane Airport: Brisbane is Virgin Australia’s home base and primary hub. Virgin operates the majority of its domestic and international services here, making connections very straightforward. Virgin flights use the Domestic Terminal (T1) and the International Terminal (T2), which are linked by an airtrain (around 5–10 minutes). The airport is well laid out with plenty of dining and shopping options, and Virgin’s domestic lounge provides food, drinks, and WiFi. The Airtrain also provides easy access to Brisbane city and the Gold Coast.

Sydney Airport: Sydney is one of Virgin Australia’s main hubs. From here, Virgin operates frequent domestic connections across Australia as well as international flights. The airport has three terminals — Virgin flights operate from Terminal 2 (Domestic) and Terminal 1 (International). Allow plenty of time if you need to transfer between them, as you’ll need to take a transfer bus. Facilities are extensive, with a wide choice of shopping, dining, and lounges. Virgin Australia’s domestic lounges are located in Terminal 2, offering food, drinks, WiFi, and business facilities.

Melbourne Airport: Melbourne is another major hub for Virgin Australia. All Virgin flights operate from Terminal 3 (Domestic) and Terminal 2 (International). Transfers between terminals are simple, as they are all connected under one roof. The airport offers a wide variety of shops, restaurants, and lounges, including Virgin Australia’s domestic lounge in Terminal 3. With high passenger volumes, check-in and security can sometimes be busy, so arriving early is recommended.
