Singapore Stopover Itinerary: How to Make the Most of 6, 12 or 24 Hours

Summary

  • A Singapore stopover is the perfect way to break up a long-haul flight from New Zealand, giving you the chance to rest, recharge and explore before your next destination.

  • If you have around six hours, take advantage of Changi Airport's sleep pods, transit hotels, shower facilities and Jewel Changi before boarding your next flight.

  • With a 12-hour stopover, you can recharge before visiting Gardens by the Bay, then return to Changi Airport to enjoy one of its many restaurants and cafés.

  • For a 24-hour or longer stopover, booking a hotel allows you to properly recover from your flight while giving you time to explore Singapore at your own pace.

  • Mix & Match can help you find flights with Singapore stopovers, turning a long travel day into an enjoyable part of your holiday.

Long-haul travel can be exciting, but it can also be exhausting. Whether you're flying from New Zealand to Europe, the UK or another destination in Asia, chances are you'll spend many hours in the air with very little quality sleep.

That's what makes a Singapore stopover such a great opportunity. Rather than simply waiting for your next flight, you can use your time to recharge, freshen up and, if your schedule allows, experience one of Asia's most vibrant cities.

Here's how to make the most of your Singapore stopover, whether you have six hours, 12 hours, 24 hours or a few days to explore.

Before You Leave Changi Airport

Before heading into Singapore, there are a few things to consider.

  • Check that you meet Singapore's entry requirements.

  • Confirm whether your luggage has been checked through to your final destination or whether you'll need to collect it.

  • Allow plenty of time to return to Changi Airport before your onward flight.

  • If you're only stopping briefly, remember that immigration, transport and airport security all take time, so don't try to squeeze too much into your itinerary.

One of the biggest advantages of Singapore is that Changi Airport is only around 20 to 30 minutes from the city, making it one of the easiest stopover destinations in the world.

Singapore Stopover Itinerary: 6 Hours

If you have around six hours before your next flight, chances are you'll be ready to rest and recharge. Long-haul travel can be exhausting, making Singapore's airport facilities the perfect way to reset before continuing your journey.

One of the most popular options is booking a sleep pod. These are private, compact spaces designed specifically for travellers needing a few hours of uninterrupted rest, complete with a comfortable bed, power outlets and a quiet environment away from the busy terminal. Sleep pods can usually be booked by the hour, with prices generally starting from approximately NZD $20–$55+ per hour, making them an affordable option if you're simply looking to catch up on a few hours of quiet, uninterrupted sleep between flights.

Alternatively, if you are just looking for a way to freshen up, Changi Airport also offers pay-per-use shower facilities from approx NZD $7 per person for basic public facilities and approx NZD $26-$67+ per person for more premium facilities, allowing you to freshen up after a long-haul flight before enjoying a meal or continuing your journey. Sometimes, a hot shower can make all the difference before boarding your next flight.

Once you're feeling refreshed, spend some time exploring Jewel Changi Airport. Home to the spectacular HSBC Rain Vortex, indoor gardens, shopping and a fantastic range of cafés and restaurants, it's an attraction in itself and well worth visiting before boarding your next flight. Just keep in mind that Jewel is located landside, outside the airport's transit area, so you'll need to clear immigration to visit and allow plenty of time to pass through security again before your next flight. Sometimes, a few hours of quality rest, or even just a hot shower and a good meal, can be far more valuable than trying to squeeze in sightseeing.

Singapore Gardens by the Bay

Singapore Stopover Itinerary: 12 Hours

With around 12 hours, you have the perfect balance of time to rest and experience one of Singapore's most iconic attractions.

If you're arriving after a long-haul or overnight flight, consider booking a transit hotel. Located within or connected to Changi Airport, these hotels offer private rooms, comfortable beds and ensuite bathrooms, allowing you to enjoy several hours of uninterrupted sleep and time to refresh before your next flight. Many can be booked in six-hour blocks, with rates generally starting from approx NZD $160–$270+, depending on the hotel and room type.

Once you've had a chance to recharge, head to Gardens by the Bay, one of Singapore's most recognisable attractions. Wander beneath the towering Supertrees, admire the beautifully landscaped gardens or, if time allows, explore the Cloud Forest or Flower Dome. If your visit falls in the evening, don't miss Garden Rhapsody, the spectacular light and sound show at Supertree Grove. This free 15-minute show takes place twice nightly, at 7:45pm and 8:45pm. After your visit, make your way back to Changi Airport, where you'll find an incredible selection of restaurants, cafés and local dining options. Enjoy a relaxed meal before your flight, giving yourself plenty of time to unwind before continuing your journey.

Singapore Stopover Itinerary: 24 Hours

If your stopover extends to around 24 hours, it's well worth booking a hotel close to Changi Airport. A comfortable night's sleep allows you to recover properly from your flight while still giving you plenty of time to explore Singapore without feeling rushed. Once you've checked in, spend the day discovering some of the city's highlights. Popular attractions include:

  • Gardens by the Bay

  • Marina Bay

  • Merlion Park

  • Chinatown

  • Kampong Glam

Spend the rest of your day exploring Singapore at your own pace before making your way back to Changi Airport with plenty of time before your next flight. If you're running short on time, Changi Airport offers an excellent range of restaurants, cafés and local dining options, making it the perfect place to enjoy a relaxed meal before continuing your journey.

Sentosa Island Singapore

Singapore Stopover Itinerary: 2–3 Days

If you have two or three days, your stopover becomes a mini holiday before your next.. Rather than staying near the airport, consider booking accommodation in areas like Marina Bay, Clarke Quay, Orchard Road or Sentosa, putting you close to many of Singapore's top attractions. Over a few days, you'll have time to experience much more of the city, including:

  • Gardens by the Bay

  • Marina Bay Sands

  • Sentosa Island

  • Universal Studios Singapore

  • Singapore Zoo or Night Safari

  • Chinatown

  • Little India

  • Kampong Glam

  • Orchard Road

  • Singapore's famous hawker centres

Taking a longer stopover is a fantastic way to experience another destination without planning a separate holiday.

Another Way to Explore: Singapore's Free Transit Tour

If you'd prefer to leave the sightseeing plans to someone else, eligible transit passengers can also experience the city on a Free Singapore Tour. If you're travelling with Singapore Airlines and have a transit time of between 5.5 and 24 hours, you may be able to choose from four different bus tours, depending on your flight schedule and the tour timings. Each tour lasts around 2.5 hours, making it an easy way to see some of Singapore's highlights during your stopover. Check the Free Singapore Tour requirements and, if your itinerary is eligible, you can book your tour online.
