What is Jetstars Baggage Allowance?

Carry On Baggage Allowance

Your carry-on allowance depends on the fare you’ve booked, and here’s how it breaks down:

Economy fares include either 7kg or 14kg

If you’re on 7kg, you can upgrade to 14kg by adding the +7kg Extra Carry-On option

Business fares include 14kg

No single item can weigh more than 10kg. Your total allowance can be spread across two items:

  • 1 main bag Must fit in the overhead locker

Max size: 56 × 36 × 23cm (including wheels and handles)

  • 1 small item Must fit under the seat in front of you

Which could be a handbag, laptop bag, coat, camera, or duty-free goods

What Is Jetstars Checked Baggage Allowance

Your checked baggage allowance depends on the fare or bundle you’ve chosen, and you can always add more if you need it (just keep in mind it’s usually cheaper to do this during booking rather than when you’re at the airport). Here’s how it works:

Economy fares

  • Some Economy bundles include checked baggage

  • You can add more if needed, up to a total of 40kg

  • Check your Fare Rules for the exact inclusions in your bundle

Business fares

  • Comes with 30kg of checked baggage included

  • You can top this up with an extra 10kg, giving you a maximum of 40kg

  • Fare Rules will outline everything that’s part of your ticket

Jetstars Oversized Baggage Allowance

Oversized baggage covers anything that’s too big for a standard suitcase, and if you’re bringing gear that falls into that category, there’s usually an extra handling fee (please see ‘Over Sized Handling Fee’ below.) These items still count toward your checked baggage weight, so make sure you’ve bought enough allowance to cover everything.

What counts as oversized?

Anything with a side longer than 1 metre is classed as oversized. This often includes:

Surfboards and other sports gear:

  • Bikes

  • Fishing rods

  • Diving equipment

  • Golf clubs

  • Larger musical instruments

  • Bulky items like TVs, or small furniture

Oversized handling fee

If you’re flying Jetstar in or out of New Zealand, oversized items come with a NZD $25 fee per item, per flight. You can bring up to two oversized pieces, but this fee is separate from your checked baggage allowance, so it doesn’t give you any extra weight.

Mobility or medical equipment is treated differently, but for most travellers carrying big adventure gear, planning ahead keeps those airport surprises (and costs) to a minimum. For more information on this please visit: Oversized Baggage

Dangerous Goods - What Are You Allowed & What Is Prohibited?

Some items can’t fly for safety reasons, and others need approval before Jetstar will accept them. If you’re flying to or from NZ, here are the key things to know:

  • Some items are completely prohibited, these can’t be taken as carry-on or checked baggage at all.

  • Certain goods may be allowed with conditions, like limits on quantity, packaging or battery size.

  • A few items require airline approval before you travel (e.g., lithium batteries, petrol-powered gear, mobility devices).

  • Rules differ depending on your flight, so it’s important to check what applies to your specific Jetstar journey.

  • You’ll need to confirm you understand these rules at check-in, whether online or at the airport.

  • If you’re unsure, it’s always safest to check before you pack, it can save delays, extra costs or items being taken off you at the airport.

Frequently Asked Questions

Checked baggage: Yes, as long as you’re within your total weight allowance, you can split the weight across multiple bags, but no single checked bag may weigh more than 32 kg.

Carry-on: Yes, you are allowed two items (one main item + one small item) under the carry-on rules.

Your main carry-on bag must be: 56 × 36 × 23 cm (including wheels and handles). The second ‘small item’ like a handbag or laptop must fit under the seat in front.

For flights from NZ:

Standard carry-on allowance: 7 kg combined weight, across two items (one main + one small item).

If upgraded (+7kg Extra Carry-On) or on certain bundles: 14 kg total across two items (10kg max for one item).

Your baggage allowance comprises two parts: carry-on and checked. The exact allowance depends on the fare or bundle you’ve booked. For example:

  • Economy “Starter” may include only the 7 kg carry-on and no checked baggage.

  • Higher bundles/fare classes include bigger allowances for both

It depends on fare and bag type:

  • Carry-on: Standard fares include 7 kg across two items, optionally upgradeable to 14 kg.

  • Checked baggage: Many basic fares do not include checked bags, but you can purchase up to 40 kg of checked baggage.

No, baggage allowances can’t be shared between passengers. Each traveller has their own allowance, and you can only use the number of checked bags you’ve paid for.

So if you’ve only purchased one checked bag, all your gear has to fit into that one bag. You can’t split your weight across extra bags unless you’ve paid for additional checked baggage.

Yes, your checked baggage allowance is based on total weight, not how you pack it. So if you’ve purchased a certain weight (for example, 20kg or 40kg), you can use that allowance across the bags you’ve paid for. Most travellers just check in one bag, but you can split your allowance across two if you’ve bought enough weight.

For carry-on, you can also divide your allowance between your main bag and your small under-seat item, as long as the combined weight stays within your limit.
